Why Wait? Life is a Special Occasion!

Rather than waiting for some big event to celebrate, celebrate life now.

Did you know that 88% of Australians admit to hoarding items they will rarely, or never, use? Although a large number of items are kept for sentimental reasons, many other possessions remain untouched for years because they are saved for those rare ‘special occasions’.

But, why wait? Life is a special occasion. Locking your prized possessions away and keeping them out of sight is counter intuitive, so rather than hoarding or hiding those items, do something with them.

Here are four top tips for making the most out of unused items.

1. Take an inventory of everything you own
How many unpacked, unopened boxes do you have? You know, those boxes that you are going to get to ‘one day’…? How about making that one day, today? Open those boxes. Take an inventory. Know what you have.

2. If you don’t use it, get rid of it
Instead of having unpacked boxes with items you’ve probably forgotten about, or, things in your house that sit there day after day not being used, put those items
to use. If you don’t use it, get rid of it. Donate unused items to charity, gift them to someone who will appreciate them, or sell them for some extra cash.

3. Enjoy the best of everything
Life is a celebration. Are you celebrating? Are you having fun? Do you allow yourself to enjoy the best of everything? If you are buying a bottle of wine, buy the best one you can afford, and savour it. If you are eating dinner out, don’t just grab fast food; go somewhere you will have great cuisine and an enjoyable experience. Treat each day as the special occasion that it is.

4. Make each day special
Every day, use or wear one thing that you would normally save for a special occasion. Hesitancy to overuse expensive or beloved items is understandable, but the reality is, what if you’re forever waiting? The satisfaction that can be found in life is a choice. When we hoard our prized possessions, when we save our items for that ‘one day’, we miss out on the job and celebration that life can be. What if you made the choice to really live?

If you’re a bit rusty on choosing, here’s a tool you can use: you have 10 seconds to live the rest of your life, what do you choose?

Okay, now that life is over. You have another 10 seconds to live the rest of your life, what do you choose? As you practice choosing every 10 seconds, it will become very clear that choosing is a powerful thing; your choice creates. Use that choice to choose the satisfaction of life and living.
